Roofing dumpster calculator
Shingles are heavy, so a roof hits the weight limit long before the box looks full. Pick your shingle, layers, and roof size, and we'll estimate the tear-off weight and point you to the right dumpster.

Shingle weight reference
One roofing square covers 100 square feet. Tear-off weight depends mostly on the shingle type and how many layers come off.
| Shingle type | Weight per square | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Three-tab asphalt | 230–250 lbs | Older single-layer asphalt roofs |
| Architectural asphalt | 400–430 lbs | Most modern homes |
| Slate or tile | 800–1,000 lbs | Heavy premium roofs |
These are estimates. Actual weight shifts with the manufacturer, moisture, underlayment, flashing, and nails, and a steep roof (8/12 and up) adds roughly 20 percent. Every size includes a weight allowance, and anything over runs $60 a ton. When in doubt, size up or call and we'll help you decide.
Built for roofing crews
Roofers are one of our core customers. Order a week ahead with the jobsite and start date, and we drop the box before tear-off begins. Need to keep going? If a box fills up, we swap the full one for an empty so your crew never stops. We set it exactly where you want it for easy loading, put boards down on new driveways or hot days, and show up when we say we will.

Roofing dumpster questions
What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?
It comes down to weight, not volume, because shingles are heavy. A single-layer asphalt roof up to about 18 squares usually fits a 15-yard, and larger or two-layer jobs move to a 20-yard or 30-yard. Run your numbers in the calculator above or call and we'll size it with you.
How many squares of shingles fit in a dumpster?
By weight, a 15-yard holds about 4 tons, which is roughly 18 squares of architectural shingles in a single layer. A 20-yard holds about 5 tons and a 30-yard about 7 tons. Two layers doubles the weight, so cut those square counts in half.
Do you deliver dumpsters for roofing crews?
Yes, roofing crews are a big part of what we do. Order a week ahead with the jobsite address and start date, and we'll drop the box right before your tear-off so it's waiting when the shingles come off.
Can you swap out a full dumpster in the middle of a job?
Yes. If you're stripping a big roof or running several houses, we swap the full box for an empty one so your crew keeps working instead of waiting. Just let us know when you're getting close.
Where will you place the roofing dumpster?
Right where you want it for easy loading off the roof, whether that's tight to the house or out by the drive. On a new driveway or a hot day we set boards under it so it doesn't mark the surface, and we keep our trucks off the yard.
