A garage cleanout is one of those jobs you put off until the car won't fit anymore. We see it all the time around Delta and the rest of NW Ohio. You open the door, look at twenty years of paint cans, busted lawn chairs, and boxes you've never reopened, and you close the door again. The trick is having somewhere to put it all. That's where a garage cleanout dumpster earns its keep. You load straight from the garage into the box, and when it's full we haul it off. No truck loads to the transfer station, no waiting in line.
Start with a sort, not a shovel
Before you start chucking things, give yourself an hour to sort. It's faster in the long run and you won't throw out the good extension cord by accident. Make four piles:
- Keep. Tools, gear, and anything you've used in the last year. Be honest with yourself here.
- Donate or sell. Furniture, working appliances, kids' bikes. Plenty of this finds a home.
- Trash. Broken stuff, old foam, warped wood, the chair with three legs.
- Can't go in the dumpster. Set this aside on its own. Paint, motor oil, old gas, car batteries, tires, and anything with the word "hazardous" on the label.
That last pile matters. We can't take hazardous waste, batteries, tires, or asbestos in a roll-off, and neither can the landfill we tip at. Your county usually runs household hazardous waste drop-off days for the paint and chemicals. Take a minute to read our acceptable items list before you start so nothing slows you down later.
What size do you need?
Most garage cleanouts fit in a 10 or 15-yard box, and that's what we steer folks toward. A one-bay garage that's cluttered but not packed to the rafters usually lands in a 10-yard dumpster at $315. If you've got a two-car garage, an attic over it, or you're clearing out a parent's place at the same time, step up to the 15-yard at $370. The extra room is cheap insurance against running out of space halfway through.
Going bigger isn't always better. The 20, 30, and 40-yard boxes are built for construction debris and full-house jobs. For a garage you'd be paying for air. Watch the weight on the heavy stuff
Garages hide weight you don't think about. Old shingles in the corner, a pallet of leftover pavers, a busted concrete birdbath, a chest freezer full of who-knows-what. Concrete and dirt get heavy fast, and every box has a weight limit before overage charges kick in. If a big share of your load is concrete or masonry, don't bury it in a 15-yarder. A smaller box loaded with heavy material is the better play. Spread heavy items across the floor of the dumpster instead of stacking them in one corner, and you'll load more before you hit the limit.
Set up for an easy drop
When we deliver, we need a flat, clear spot the truck can back up to. A driveway is ideal. On a fresh asphalt driveway or a hot day we'll put boards down under the box so it doesn't mark the surface. Clear your cars out of the way before we show up, and think about which direction you want the door facing so you can walk debris straight in. If you're stacking it close to the garage, even better.
A few things that make the day go smoother:
- Have your "keep" pile already moved out so you're not working around it.
- Break down boxes and big cardboard so they lay flat and take less room.
- Don't overfill past the top rail. We can't haul a load that's mounded over the sides.
