About limestone screenings

Limestone #10, what most folks call screenings, is the fine blue-grey crushed limestone with the powder left in. There's no big stone in it, so it packs fast and screeds dead flat. That's exactly what you want for a setting bed: a smooth, even layer the pavers or flagstone sit on top of.

It goes on after the base stone, not instead of it. Lay your base, then a thin layer of screenings, screed it level, set your pavers or brick, and sweep the rest into the joints. It covers about 90 square feet per cubic yard at 2 inches, and a leveling layer goes thinner than that. If you're pulling up an old patio or walk first, we rent roll-off dumpsters too.

Limestone screenings questions

What are limestone screenings used for?

They're a leveling layer. The fine stone packs fast and screeds flat, so it goes over the base stone as the setting bed under pavers, walkways, flagstone, and brick, and it sweeps tight into the joints.

How much does a cubic yard of screenings cover?

About 90 square feet at 2 inches deep. A leveling layer is usually run an inch or so, so a cubic yard goes further than that. Use the calculator on this page, or call and we'll figure your project.

Are screenings the same as sand for setting pavers?

They do a similar job but pack harder. The powder in screenings locks the layer in place once you compact it, so a lot of folks use it as the setting bed and then sweep finer sand into the joints. Call and we'll talk through your project.

Do you deliver screenings near Toledo?

Yes, within about 25 miles of our Delta yard. You can also bring a truck or trailer and we'll load you. It's sold by the ton.

Do I need base stone under the screenings, or can I lay them straight on the dirt?

Screenings go on after the base stone, not instead of it. Lay your base like #411 first, then a thin layer of screenings screeded flat, and set your pavers on top. We carry the base stone too, so tell us the project and we'll get you both.

Can I pick up screenings at the Delta yard instead of paying for delivery?

Yes. Bring a truck or trailer to our Delta yard and we'll load you right up. Screenings are sold by the ton, so let us know roughly how much you need and we'll figure it out with you.
