About #4 stone

#4 stone is large, clean, angular crushed limestone running 1 to 2.5 inches. The pieces are washed, so there's no dust filling the gaps. Those big open spaces are the whole point: water runs straight through instead of pooling, which is why #4 is the stone you reach for when the job is about drainage.

It goes in drainage beds and dry wells, in large French drains, and along slopes and ditches where you need rock heavy enough to stay put and control erosion. It also shines on soft, wet ground. The stones are too big to sink in and press down, so they bridge into a stable mat you can drive equipment over, and the same idea makes #4 a good first layer under a driveway built over poor soil. If you're clearing out a wet, mucky area first, we rent roll-off dumpsters too.

#4 stone questions

What is #4 stone used for?

It's a drainage and base stone. The large pieces leave big open gaps that move a lot of water, so it goes in drainage beds, dry wells, French drains, and under driveways built over poor or wet soil.

Is #4 stone good for getting across muddy ground?

Yes. The size is too big to sink and press into soft ground, so it makes a stable mat you can drive equipment over where smaller stone would just disappear into the mud.

How much does a cubic yard of #4 stone cover?

Because the stone is large and open, coverage varies with how deep you run it. Use the calculator on this page for a rough cubic-yard and tonnage estimate, or call and we'll figure your project.

Do you deliver #4 stone near Toledo?

Yes, within about 25 miles of our Delta yard. You can also bring a truck or trailer and we'll load you. It's sold by the ton.

What is the difference between #4 stone and #57 stone?

Size is the main difference. #4 runs larger, from 1 to 2.5 inches, so it leaves bigger open gaps and moves more water, which is why it goes in drainage beds and under wet ground. If you tell us the job we'll point you to the right stone.
