About #304 limestone

#304 is whitish-gray crushed limestone that runs from about 3/4 inch pieces down to fine dust. That mix is what makes it work as a base: the larger stone gives it strength, and the dust packs in and locks everything together. Run it 3 to 4 inches deep, rake it level, and pack it down, and you get a hard, stable surface that holds up to traffic.

That's why it's a standard base around here. Under an asphalt driveway, under a road or lane, under a concrete pour, or as the foundation for a shed or parking pad, #304 is usually where you start. It's not a decorative stone, the fines mean it won't stay clean and loose, but for anything you want to stay put, that's exactly the point. If you're tearing out an old surface first, we rent roll-off dumpsters too.
