About #304 limestone
#304 is whitish-gray crushed limestone that runs from about 3/4 inch pieces down to fine dust. That mix is what makes it work as a base: the larger stone gives it strength, and the dust packs in and locks everything together. Run it 3 to 4 inches deep, rake it level, and pack it down, and you get a hard, stable surface that holds up to traffic.
That's why it's a standard base around here. Under an asphalt driveway, under a road or lane, under a concrete pour, or as the foundation for a shed or parking pad, #304 is usually where you start. It's not a decorative stone, the fines mean it won't stay clean and loose, but for anything you want to stay put, that's exactly the point.
