Tearing out an old driveway, patio, or foundation leaves you with a pile of broken concrete. It is heavy, bulky, and burying it in a landfill is a waste of money and space. Concrete is one of the easiest materials to recycle, and around here you have good options for getting rid of it.
What happens to old concrete
Old concrete does not have to be trash. Once it is hauled off, it gets crushed and screened into clean, sized aggregate that goes right back to work:
- Base under new driveways, pads, and pavement
- Fill for grading and leveling low spots
- Backfill behind retaining walls
- Drainage and erosion control along banks and ditches
Crushed concrete holds up as well as new aggregate for most base and fill jobs, usually at a lower cost. If you are building a base for a new project, our crushed limestone and gravel does the same work.
Two ways to move a load of concrete
There are really two ways to clear out broken concrete:
- Haul it yourself to a yard that takes it
- Rent a roll-off dumpster, load it on site, and have it hauled for you
Either way, keep the load clean. Concrete by itself, without wood, trash, or tangled rebar mixed in, is the easiest to recycle.
